Vampire Facial: Sensational or Scary?

It sounds like something straight out of your nightmares, but the platelet rich plasma, or “vampire,” facial is anything but a bad dream.

Seen on the social media pages of everyone from Kim Kardashian to Bar Rafaeli, the so-called vampire facial uses the patient’s own platelet rich plasma to super-charge collagen production and create a more youthful appearance.

How It Works

First, the patient is given a microdermabrasion treatment, which exfoliates the skin by almost sandblasting it using a device that shoots tiny microcrystals into the skin to help reduce the appearance of some acne scarring, fine lines, enlarged pores, and uneven tone and texture.

Next, a vial of blood is drawn from the patient. It is then spun in a centrifuge, separating out valuable platelets from the rest of the blood. Those platelets are then injected directly back into the patient’s skin.

How Long Does It Take?

The PRP/vampire facial only takes between 30 and 60 minutes, depending on the condition of the skin and the areas the patient would like treated with the microdermabrasion portion.

How Long Does It Last?

The results from a vampire facial last about 18 to 24 months, depending on both your individual skin and how many treatments you’ve undergone.

How Many Treatments Will I Need?

This also depends on how much damage your skin has incurred. For those with healthy, even skin, two to four treatments are recommended. For patients with more damaged areas to correct, four to six treatments are suggested.

How Much Will It Cost?

The PRP/ vampire facial isn’t cheap – with prices averaging around $800 a pop, getting anywhere from two to six treatments could really make a dent in your wallet. Plus, with a downtime of at least one day and several months before you may even notice results, the vampire facial may not work fast enough for all patients.
