If you have been researching liposuction but have been hesitant about it due to the cost or downtime, you may have already heard about a supposedly cheaper, less invasive alternative called carboxytherapy. But what is this new therapy – and is it really as good as liposuction? Here’s what you should know before you choose one over the other.
What Is Carboxytherapy?
Carboxytherapy is a procedure that injects carbon dioxide into the skin in an effort to reduce scars, cellulite and stretch marks, as well as purportedly reduce fat. Recent studies have shown that carboxytherapy in fact does do everything it claims to do – but with some catches.
The Good News
The good news is that carboxytherapy is less expensive than other treatments, and because it uses carbon dioxide, it is much better tolerated than other treatments.
The Bad News
First, carboxytherapy requires numerous treatments – sometimes as many as 12 sessions. Also, the treatment is effective, but it’s not permanent. In fact, that same study that found carboxytherapy effective found that it is only effective for about six months, at which point you’d need to start the treatment process again.
Worse yet, carboxytherapy is not FDA approved here in the United States, which means patients who utilize this treatment do so at their own risk.
On the Other Hand …
Liposuction is not only FDA approved, but it is also more effective and permanent, which means though it may have a higher up-front cost than carboxytherapy, you can expect better results that last longer. That means your initial investment goes further, and you don’t need to spend more time and more money getting repeat procedures every six months.
So, Which Should You Choose?
Whether you decide to go with carboxytherapy or liposuction, you are still looking at making a significant investment in your appearance. But don’t let what looks like a better deal distract you from better results. Liposuction is still the gold standard in body fat removal, and it’s always a better deal to invest in something that lasts than throw away money on something that doesn’t.
